Tile and Backsplash Installation
Tile layout, substrate and edge details matter as much as tile choice, especially where splash exposure changes the assembly.
Direct answer
Before a backsplash is installed, check that the wall is sound, sufficiently flat and compatible with the chosen tile-setting system. Loose drywall, peeling paint, grease or old adhesive can change the preparation. Confirm the countertop and cabinet positions, outlet details, tile pattern and exposed edges before installation. A tile sample alone cannot settle the work: the finished result depends on the supporting surface and the dimensions between all the existing kitchen components.

| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Wall condition | Identify damaged board, loose coatings and residues before selecting preparation. |
| Layout | Use actual counter, cabinet, outlet and tile dimensions. |
| Edges | Choose terminations and joint details before tile is set. |
Record whether the surface is bare drywall, painted board, existing tile or an area left after removal. Look for torn paper, soft spots, grease and adhesive ridges. MAPEI’s backsplash guide requires a suitable prepared substrate and gives product-specific instructions. Do not assume a bonding primer makes loose material sound or that every old adhesive can remain.
Check the wall against the selected system’s flatness requirements and the proposed tile format. A long tile can make a bowed surface more difficult to finish neatly. Decide whether localized patching, broader preparation or board replacement is needed. If moisture damage appears, establish the cause before concealing it behind a new surface that will be harder to inspect.
Measure the real space between the countertop and upper cabinets, including corners and any full-height area behind the range. Check whether cabinets are aligned and whether the counter is final. Changes to either can alter cuts, visible lines and edge locations. Agree on those references before final tile quantities or a detailed layout are approved.
Map receptacles, switches, hood attachments and other interruptions. The added tile thickness can affect how electrical components meet the finished surface. Identify electrical adjustments for the appropriate trade; removing a cover plate is not the same scope as relocating or modifying a box. Confirm appliance and hood requirements before choosing where tile stops or penetrations are made.
Discuss starting lines, pattern, grout colour, corner treatment and where cut tiles will appear. Specify a finished tile edge, compatible profile or other approved termination at exposed ends. Countertop junctions and changes of plane need details suited to the system. Make these decisions before setting tile rather than discovering an unfinished edge after the main field is complete.
We would compare the wall condition, tile specification and kitchen dimensions, then separate preparation, installation and finishing in the estimate. Clarify removal, wall repair, electrical coordination and painting beside the tile. Ask how an unsuitable surface discovered after removal will be reviewed, and keep enough access to verify preparation before the finish hides it.
Send wide kitchen photos, close-ups of the wall and the tile product link. Include countertop status, cabinet changes, outlets and the intended backsplash limits so preparation and edge work can be scoped together.
Tile layout, substrate and edge details matter as much as tile choice, especially where splash exposure changes the assembly.

Match the repair to failed grout, failed flexible sealant or a loose tile, and check moisture beneath.
Homeowner guide
Check bond, support, height and the wet-area assembly before deciding whether the old tile can stay.
