Can New Tile Be Installed Over Existing Tile?
Direct answer
New tile can sometimes be installed over existing tile when the old layer is firmly bonded, the supporting assembly is stable, and the selected installation system permits that substrate. The added height and wet-area details must also work. Loose tiles, movement, unresolved moisture or an unsuitable surface are reasons to investigate or remove the old layer. An overlay is a construction choice that needs assessment, not an automatic shortcut whenever the existing tile looks intact.

Inspect the existing installation
Map cracked, loose or missing tiles and ask about earlier repairs or leaks. Check the support and the likely cause of any movement. An assessment may require opening a limited area; tapping the surface alone cannot establish every concealed condition. Covering a weak layer transfers that uncertainty into the new finish rather than removing it.
Assess flatness and the complete build-up
Measure the existing surface against the chosen tile system’s flatness requirements. Include any preparation layer, mortar and new tile when checking final height. Review door clearance, thresholds, exposed edges, stairs where affected and fixture interfaces. A technically possible bond can still create a poor transition or interfere with an appliance, drain or door.
Select a compatible preparation system
MAPEI’s Canadian ECO Prim Grip documentation includes existing ceramic tile among suitable substrates under its stated conditions. That is product-specific evidence, not permission to use any primer or mortar. Confirm cleaning, surface preparation, approved follow-on materials and application limits from the current system instructions. Grease, coatings or other contamination must not simply be hidden under new material.
Resolve waterproofing before appearance
A shower wall or floor is more than its visible tile. Establish how waterproofing, penetrations, corners and the drain will remain part of a suitable assembly. New grout does not demonstrate the condition of concealed waterproofing. Where a new system is proposed, follow its requirements; Schluter’s water-test guidance applies to its shower assembly, not every tiled surface.
Compare removal with the overlay scope
Removal creates debris and can expose substrate repairs, but it can also resolve height conflicts and reveal damaged support. An overlay may reduce demolition while adding preparation and edge work. Compare both completed scopes, including transitions and fixtures. If the existing assembly cannot be assessed sufficiently, the estimate should identify that uncertainty instead of assuming it is suitable.
