Should I Regrout, Recaulk or Retile?
Direct answer
Regrout sound, bonded tile when the grout in ordinary tile joints has failed and the cause is addressed. Recaulk an appropriate flexible joint, such as a change of plane, when its sealant has failed. Retile or investigate further when tiles are loose, cracked or the substrate or moisture condition is uncertain. New grout or caulk is a finish repair; neither secures a moving tile nor fixes water entry behind the assembly.

Tell the joints apart

Check what supports the tile
Map loose or cracked tiles, repeated grout loss, gaps at fixtures, staining and soft adjacent surfaces. A sound, dry assembly with failed finish may allow local joint work. If the bond, backing or waterproofing is affected, determine that scope before replacing joints or tile.
