Loose Cabinet Hinges: When the Fixing Point Is Damaged

A hinge adjustment will not repair a fixing point that no longer holds. If screws turn without tightening, a mounting plate moves with the door or the material has broken away, assess the door and cabinet substrate first. The repair may retain the hinge, use a suitable repair fitting or require replacement of a damaged component.

Quick facts
ItemWhat to know
Loose screwCheck whether sound material still holds the fixing.
Moving plateInspect the substrate and plate rather than adjusting the door repeatedly.
Damaged doorSupport it and stop use if a hinge is pulling free.

Locate the movement

Observe whether movement is at the door cup, hinge arm, cabinet mounting plate or surrounding material. Take a close-up with the door supported. A door rubbing because of an adjustment issue is different from a hinge pulling out; tightening every visible screw can change alignment without restoring support.

Check the material around the fixing

Show cracking, enlarged holes, crumbling particleboard, swelling and previous repairs. Include the other hinges and the full door. The remaining material, door size and hinge position determine whether a repair has suitable support. Covering a damaged area with a plate is not automatically a sound repair.

Match the repair and hinge geometry

Identify the hinge model, mounting plate, opening type and door arrangement before sourcing parts. Manufacturer adjustment instructions apply to their specified hardware, not to repairing every substrate. A repair fitting must suit the actual damage and avoid interference with shelves, interior drawers and neighbouring doors.

Compare repair with a component replacement

Retaining a sound door may be practical when support can be restored. A split hinge cup area, extensive swelling or several failed positions may favour a new door or cabinet component. Ask what would remain, what must change and whether the appearance will match before accepting a replacement.

What Renovation1 does in practice

Send the whole door, each hinge, the loose mounting point and the cabinet interior. Do not remove a large door solely to obtain a photograph.
