Finishing a Partly Installed IKEA Kitchen: What Needs Assessment First?

A partly installed IKEA kitchen needs an assessment of the existing work, current plan, supports, cabinet alignment and missing or damaged parts before a completion scope can be agreed. Some units may remain as installed; others may need correction. The visible unfinished portion alone cannot show how much work is needed to finish the kitchen properly.

Create an honest starting inventory

Mark each unit as packaged, assembled, installed or finished. List loose hardware, missing parts and damage. Include the plan that matches what is now on site and explain changes made during installation. A new installer needs the current condition, not only the original order confirmation.

Assess what earlier work can remain

Check accessible attachment points, supports, cabinet alignment, connections and operation. A rail or fixing hidden by finished work may need further access to assess. Do not treat a cabinet as accepted because it is hanging or because the front looks straight. Identify evidence gaps before agreeing to retain it.

Order the corrections before dependent finishes

Resolve layout and support questions before a countertop is measured or irreversible finish cuts proceed. Check the countertop supplier’s readiness conditions. Appliances, connections, backsplash and finishing need an agreed handoff sequence. If existing work must be removed, define protection and the affected retained surfaces first.

Quote completion and corrective work separately

Distinguish assembling remaining units, correcting earlier work, fitting panels and fronts, sourcing missing parts and coordinating other trades. Agree how newly exposed issues change the scope. Finishing an interrupted installation can be assessed without assuming the whole kitchen must be dismantled or that every prior component can stay.
