Should I Install a Slab Door or a Prehung Door?

Choose a slab door when the existing frame is sound, aligned and compatible with the replacement. A slab is the moving door leaf; a prehung unit includes the door fitted into a new frame. Prehung installation makes sense when the jamb is damaged, the opening is being rebuilt or the existing fit cannot reasonably be retained. Compare the complete installation scope, including hardware, casing and paint, rather than the door price alone.

Decide whether the frame is worth keeping
Look at the jamb, hinge attachment, latch area and gaps around the closed door. A straight-looking casing can hide a poorly aligned jamb. A sound frame with a suitable opening supports a slab replacement; damaged or distorted support needs a separate decision first.
Measure the actual opening and hardware
Record the existing leaf and frame dimensions, thickness, swing direction and finished-floor clearance. Photograph hinge locations, hinge shape and latch position. A nominal door size does not establish that pre-machined hardware locations will match. Confirm these details with the proposed product before buying, especially if flooring changes will raise the surface beneath the door.
Understand the work a slab still needs
A replacement slab may need compatible hinges, routing, latch preparation, permitted trimming and finishing. Product construction limits what can be cut or altered. The old door can help document the fit, but a worn or altered leaf should not be copied blindly. Retaining the jamb saves its removal only when the resulting door can operate correctly.
Include the surrounding work for a prehung unit
A prehung replacement requires removing the old assembly and fitting the new one to the opening. Discuss casing removal, reuse or replacement, jamb depth, baseboard junctions and any exposed wall repair. New factory-fitted parts still need correct site installation. An unsuitable rough opening cannot be ignored simply because the door arrived with a frame.
Check the kind of door being replaced
This comparison is most straightforward for ordinary interior doors. Exterior, garage-separation and other rated assemblies may have additional product and approval requirements. Do not transfer interior trimming advice to them. If the opening itself will change, establish that scope before ordering and confirm applicable approvals rather than treating it as a simple leaf replacement.
