Should You Paint Before or After Installing New Flooring?
Direct answer
When a room needs both substantial preparation and new flooring, it often makes sense to complete demolition, dusty wall or ceiling repairs and the main painting before the finished floor goes in. Baseboard work and paint touch-ups may follow flooring. The best order changes if the floor stays, existing trim is retained or removal will damage finished walls. Agree on the whole sequence and protection plan rather than expecting either trade to complete everything in one uninterrupted visit.

List what will actually be removed
Flooring, baseboards, door casings and built-in items create different disturbance at the walls. Decide what stays before the painter repairs a boundary that will be opened again. If old flooring is being removed, allow for the substrate condition discovered underneath. A flooring date should not assume that every hidden repair will already have been resolved.
Complete wall and ceiling preparation
Identify holes, failed joints, loose coatings and other defects before choosing the paint finish. Benjamin Moore’s preparation guidance separates cleaning, surface preparation and priming from the finish coat. Plan sanding and dust removal with the room protection. Where material concerns or moisture require investigation, resolve them before treating the area as ready for ordinary finish work.
Schedule the main painting sensibly
With the room clear and preparation complete, much of the ceiling and wall painting can happen before new flooring. That does not eliminate protection for surfaces remaining in place. Follow the coating instructions and avoid assuming a surface that feels dry can immediately tolerate every contact. Confirm when installers can work around freshly finished walls without damaging them.
Protect finishes during flooring work
Agree on how flooring is carried, cut and installed, where tools are set down and who maintains protection. Protect finished walls and doorways as well as the floor. If painting must happen afterward, choose a covering and fixing method compatible with the flooring and coating instructions. Do not assume any tape can be left on a new finish without consequences.
Finish the baseboards and transitions
Flooring height and perimeter requirements affect trim fitting. Quick-Step’s cited laminate instructions require wall-fixed skirting that does not restrain the floor. After the agreed trim work, finish fastener marks, eligible joints and paint touch-ups. Decide whether a local touch-up is acceptable or a wider area must be repainted; installation completion and final visual completion can be separate visits.
